Canada's Latest Icebreaker

Post by Mr Link »

AIS data shows that Canada's latest icebreaker, currently named Mangystau 2, has been in Sorel, Que since January 3rd.  Built for ice breaking in shallow waters, it was built in 2010 in Romania and had been working in the Caspian Sea.  It will supposedly be retrofitted in Canada with the intention to assign it to the Great Lakes.  It sounds like it may be a year or two before it is operational.  Once it is, I believe the plan is to send the Samuel Risley, and perhaps the Griffon to shipyards for major upgrades and retrofits.
